What Are Dental Veneers?

As far as veneers, there are a lot of different ceramics out there, and so we will pick the ceramic that fits the particular patient. As far as strength or function, aesthetics, so different ceramics give us some different things, but if somebody doesn't like their smile, we try to do as minimal of dentistry as we can. Veneers are a great way to do that, to enhance their smile and give them the look that they are looking for.

Veneers are thin, shell-like pieces made specifically to fit over your teeth. They will match the color and size of your existing teeth, so no one will notice anything but how attractive they look. Veneers are placed on the front of your teeth, so they cover up any small cracks, chips, or similar imperfections. As soon as they are made and placed, your smile is instantly better. And because they are very strong, they protect your existing teeth. By covering up any cracks, veneers also help prevent tooth decay and further damage. Great look and great protection—what more could you want?

How Are They Made?

Because veneers are placed over your existing teeth, Dr. Vareldzis will use 3D scanning technology to make an accurate, digital map of your smile. For most patients, we can use CEREC Technology to create your veneers right here in our Medford, OR dental office. If we do have to send the measurements to an outside lab, we only use labs right here in the U.S. At Hillcrest Family Dentistry, we offer two materials to make veneers from: e.max and ceramic. When you speak with Dr. Vareldzis, he will go over the differences, and the two of you can decide which is best for your smile.

How Are They Placed?

You need your veneers to fit perfectly, so the first thing to be done is to measure your teeth accurately. Then, we make a wax-up, or a model of how the veneers will fit. This gives Dr. Vareldzis a physical model to look at from all angles, to help pick the exact shape and location of the veneers. The wax-up is scanned to create a digital model, and most of the time, we will use CEREC technology to create the veneers in our office. (For some complicated cases, the veneers will need to be made in a lab.)

Before placing the veneers, Dr. Vareldzis will carefully remove a very thin layer of enamel from your teeth. This way, the thin porcelain veneer will sit flush with your existing teeth and look completely normal. The veneers are then bonded to your teeth using a safe adhesive. This entire process can sometimes be done in one visit with our CEREC technology, or it can take a few visits. Either way, your veneers will be stain-resistant and should last about 20 years.
